Generalising the conflict between Science and Christianity to all other religion, or at least to Islam is not fair.
saleem- DubaiAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38085367.post-58911945524511330012011-05-17T15:23:15.636-04:002011-05-17T15:23:15.636-04:00More power to you, Nidhal. From your response I get the impression that people are fairly receptive to differing opinions in the UAE. I think that's a good and healthy attitude, and I hope it spreads to other Muslim countries.Mohamedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03713658577594814316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38085367.post-48034770354205302072011-05-17T10:42:17.467-04:002011-05-17T10:42:17.467-04:00Mohamed, you are a careful reader...
Indeed, many...Mohamed, you are a careful reader...
Indeed, many Muslims today would not be happy with that statement, but: a) this is the UAE, not KSA; b) the statement was phrased in a way that is difficult to object to, even by those who believe in I`jaz; c) so far I have found the editors of Gulf News (and other local venues where I have published) very respectful of my views, and they have not asked me to delete, or even dilute, any statements of that kind.
I do think one needs to (intelligently) challenge the prevailing views, when one is convinced they are wrong. I try to do my part in various ways (blog posts, newspaper columns, interviews, lectures, academic papers, etc.).Nidhal Guessoumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12638764091228065424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38085367.post-41410411339421349172011-05-17T05:39:58.762-04:002011-05-17T05:39:58.762-04:00Nidhal. This sounds like a good book. I find this ...Nidhal. This sounds like a good book. I find this sentence from your review interesting: “We now know, of course […] that the scriptures are not repositories of scientific knowledge”. I was wondering if you get a lot of flak from Muslim readers in the UAE for writing something like that. I’ve lived in Saudi Arabia for some years and I know that many people there would not take kindly to such a statement---largely because of their belief in the alleged scientific content (i’jaz) of the Quran. Are readers in the UAE more open-minded in such matters, perhaps?Mohamedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03713658577594814316noreply@blogger.com
